Over and Over Again by I Am They Performance
I Am They is a half dozen-member ring that includes Adam Palmer on atomic number 82 vocals and guitar, Matthew Hein on pb vocals and guitar and Stephanie Kulla on lead vocals, Justin Shinn on keys, Bobby Stiehler on bass, and Sara Palmer on drums. Together they've forged an organic sound that is fresh and inventive musically while serving upward songs that are easily embraced in a corporate setting yet have the personal feel of i centre crying out to the Father.
They accept just released their debut unmarried "From the Day." On January 27, they volition be releasing their debut cocky-titled anthology. We and so honored to catch up with them for this exclusive Hallels' interview.
Hallels: Cheers so much for your fourth dimension. Allow's start with the nearly obvious: why do you call yourselves "I AM THEY"?
Thank y'all for taking the fourth dimension to talk with united states of america! Ok, and so our ring proper noun has kind of an interesting story. We originally had a dissimilar name, which was actually just the name of our ministry, but afterward seeing how many times that proper noun came up in a Google search (i.e. way as well many times), nosotros decided that we probably needed to come up up with a new name. Nosotros threw around a pocket-sized handful of ideas and collectively landed on the proper name I Am They. The idea backside the name was birthed out of the Gospel of John in affiliate 17, where Jesus is praying for His disciples and throughout the chapter He keeps referring to them every bit 'they'. Afterward on in the chapter, Jesus says in His prayer "My prayer is non for them lonely. I pray also for those who volition believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, but as you are in me and I am in you lot. Maytheytoo exist in united states of america so that the world may believe that you lot have sent me. I have given them the celebrity that you gave me, thatthey may be one as we are one..." So we thought it would exist a absurd personalization to sayIamthey - I am a disciple of Christ. The name is just as personal in the firsthand sense as it is broadly inclusive of whatever disciple of Christ. Then any follower of Christ tin say alongside of u.s.a. "I am they" too.
Hallels: How did the band start?
Subsequently playing and writing together for 4 years, Matt and Adam formed the ring in 2008 with the intent of putting together a squad of musicians from the local church customs to atomic number 82 out a three hr long dark of just worship on Halloween night. We named the outcome "Solomon'southward Porch", and the band was made upwards of worship leaders and musicians from various local churches. In fact, of the half-dozen members of the band, v of us were from different churches.
We envisioned the nighttime to exist a unmarried outcome and information technology was intended to be a unifying nighttime of worship for the local church community. Well, information technology turned out to be and then well received that when we asked people if they'd like to turn information technology into a regularly occurring ministry, the respond was overwhelming yes - and so we did. God has been using the ministry building of Solomon's Porch for 7 years at present, and information technology's still merely as much an "result" for our local organized religion customs each time every bit it was for the first one.
Hallels: How would you describe your sound and music?
Musically, if y'all take 2 parts folk, 2 parts popular, and ane part audio-visual driven worship - so mix all of that together - you'll go something close to I Am They.
Our audio is basically the byproduct of what we did out of necessity while trying to pull off the songs nosotros were covering for those worship nights every bit merely half dozen musicians. Then we take 3 role vocal harmonies, 3 atomic number 82 singers that trade off leading songs and even sections of each song, group vocals, eclectic instrumentation and riffs, and multiple instruments played past most everyone in the band. When nosotros were doing those worship nights, whenever in that location was a vocal we did that had an instrument nosotros didn't have, nosotros would make a point to buy that instrument and learn it for that song. Being that we are primarily an audio-visual band, nosotros have a lot of folk instruments that play a prominent roll in our songs too.
Hallels: For our readers who may non have heard your new single "From the 24-hour interval," can you lot tell united states of america what the vocal'southward about?
'From the Solar day' was written as a salvation commemoration vocal. We wanted to create something that felt both joyful and excited nigh meeting God and having the hope of eternity with Him in heaven as a result of that divine meeting. In that location are a few scripture references that we pulled from in writing it besides, one beingness Revelation 22:1-five, where it talks about there existence no more than night or need for lamps, because the Lord Himself will exist the low-cal. Some other scripture that inspired the song is Isaiah 51:11, where it says, "Then the ransomed of the Lord will return and come with joyful shouting to Zion, and everlasting joy volition be on their heads. They will obtain gladness and joy, and sorrow and sighing volition flee abroad."
Hallels: One of the songs on the new record "Over and Over Again" is very personal to you, can you lot tell us nigh the story behind the song?
Sure. 'Over and Over Over again' is a song that was birthed out of my (Adam) story of how I came to faith. Each of u.s.a. has our own story with defining moments sort of sprinkled in throughout various capacity in information technology. For me, one such defining moment was when my oldest blood brother was killed in a boozer driving blow when I was 7 years sometime. It deeply affected my family, to the indicate of my parents eventually getting divorced. Several years afterward, as an atheist struggling to brand sense of life and expiry and the world around me, I began to feel like I had no friends and no dearest in my life. Without going into particular, my life and my world both became very nighttime and hopeless places. After seeing several doctors and counselors, I was placed on anti-depressants to care for clinical depression... and I just came to the betoken where I felt like life was no longer worth living.
After drafting upwardly a ambiguous notation meant to go out no answers as to "why", I attempted suicide at historic period sixteen. I survived. I planned to attempt again with a target appointment of two weeks out, and when it came to the actual moment of property a gun underneath my chin, I just couldn't bring myself to go through with it. I went to schoolhouse the next day and met a girl named Alicia who would forever touch on my life and, ultimately, my eternity. She had ready a fourth dimension for u.s. to meet up, and I very excitedly agreed to it and postponed my plans for some other endeavour on my life equally a result. It gave me something to promise for and look forward to. When the time had come up to meet, I anxiously showed up and waited... and waited for her to show up, and she didn't. And so, telling myself that I wouldn't allow myself to feel rejected and let down whatever more, I decided I was going to go home correct then and cease my life.
Correct every bit I was walking out the door of my high schoolhouse, she shouted out at me to cease and sincerely apologized for being late. We concluded up sitting downwards and talking, and she asked if whatsoever i of her friends we were sitting near had a bible that they could give to me, and a girl named Sara, who is now my married woman and the drummer for I Am They, cautiously gave me a pocket-sized bible - which I later learned washer get-go bible that she received as a new believer. I took home that little bible and read through the Gospel of John upwards until chapter 14 verse 19, where Jesus says "because I alive, you also will live". It really felt equally though it was Jesus speaking those words directly to me - saying that because He lives, I would live, too, rather than accept my life.
After several weeks of hanging out with Alicia and her family, I was able to see that Alicia was very different than many of the Christians I had met before. You see, she very much matched the message she was sharing with me. It wasn't only a show she put on - this was real to her; and it was the spelling of her very life and identity. I call back coming together her family for the first fourth dimension and all of them knew my name alee of fourth dimension - her granddaddy, her dad, her mom, her youth pastor - and they all hugged me and loved on me and fabricated me feel what information technology must have felt like to have a loving family unit that cared deeply for each other - and Iand then badly wanted that. So several weeks later, Alicia asked if I would ever consider giving my life to the Lord...and I said aye. She then asked, "When would you want to practice that? ...Now?" and I thought well-nigh it for a second and answered, "Yeah. Right at present." So we pulled over in her motorcar and I gave my life to God correct there, literally on the side of the road.
God began to dramatically change my hungers and my passions soon thereafter. But like whatsoever story, in that location take been mountaintops and valleys. The lyrics for 'Over and Over Again' were written during one such valley; a specific lyric being, "When my fears chase my failures, Oh God; oh when sky'due south glow seems and so far; wake me up to Your celebrity, Oh God; draw my eyes to Yours where my aid comes from".There are these times in our walk with God where it feels similar our past and its wounds and our regrets and failures are in suchheavypursuit of our joy it can get out us just feeling defeated; like we need to experience ashamed or like we are non worth it. And it's in those moments that the glow of heaven just seems then far off and unreachable. But in Lamentations 3, it says that God'due south mercies never come up to an finish; that they are new every forenoon! And Jesus says in Matthew 18 that He will leave the 99 just to pursue the 1... and each of u.s.a. has been that "1" at one point or another. Over and over again, we can run and hide in our shame and defeat, and God will seek subsequently usa and pull us back in close to Him and lovingly identify his hand nether our chin and lift our optics back to His and speak to us "I have loved yous with an everlasting love. I accept proven it and so -I love you."
Hallels: What do you want listeners to grasp after listening to your new tape?
I call up that as a band, our goal is to encourage and relate with people that hear our music. We are very interested in hearing other people's stories and in sharing ours besides - and one of the ways we similar to practice that is through our songs. Each of the lyrics on this album were very intentionally weighed out and written as a mode to express something either from our lives journeys, our organized religion, our healing, our conservancy, our victories or failures, or our passion for our God. So I'd say that if people walk away from listening to our album having felt like they just had shared in something alongside of usa, or felt encouraged, we volition feel fully successful.
